Speaking ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in the island nation, Seychelles Foreign Minister Barry Faure stated that the existing global order and international institutions require significant reforms to better represent present-day realities. He said India deserves permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council because of its vast population, expanding global influence, and substantial contributions to peacekeeping operations, maritime security, and multilateral diplomacy.
Barry Faure emphasized that Seychelles fully supports India's candidature for permanent membership of the Security Council and believes that India's inclusion would strengthen global balance while promoting international peace and stability.
The Foreign Minister also described the bilateral relationship between India and Seychelles as excellent, noting that the partnership has continued to grow since Seychelles gained independence in 1976. He highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two nations and reaffirmed the importance of their strategic cooperation.
His remarks come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins a two-day State Visit to Seychelles to participate in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the country's National Day as the Guest of Honour. The visit is aimed at further strengthening the longstanding diplomatic partnership and expanding cooperation between India and Seychelles across multiple sectors.
Seychelles' renewed endorsement of India's permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council carries diplomatic significance at a time when calls for comprehensive reforms of global institutions continue to gain momentum.
